About producer responsibility
Extended Producer Responsibility for batteries in Norway.
The EU Battery Directive of 2006 places the responsibility for satisfactory collection and recycling of disused batteries on the battery producers. In this context, anyone who places a battery for sale on the national market is a producer. Producer responsibility is applicable from the very first battery.
The producer / importer may choose to transfer the job to a third party, who will act on behalf of the producer / importer. Companies acting on behalf of producers / importers are often called Compliance Organizations; whose job is to ensure back cover to producers / importers. The carriers of the extended producer responsibility in the Norwegian market - the importers - have established three non-profit recycling organizations, which they control through ownership.
